1929 - ARGUMENT SETTLED

Feat of Morris Minor - One way to stifle doubts and disbelief is to win an argument and a bet by demonstration. That was the method employed by Mr. L. Deal, of Cootamundra (New South Wales), after his statement that he had travelled from Cootamundra to Sydney in a Morris Minor in six hours and three-quarters had raised a cloud of doubts and ridicule in his home town. Scoffers said: "That is 267 miles, and there is not a light car capable of the performance" Uncivil war seemed imminent in Cootamundra until somebody suggested, "Money talks." Side bets of £5 were lodged with a local bank manager and a Morris Minor, driven by Dr Allun with Mr Deal as a passenger, set out to win or lose the money. It won. The distance was covered in six hours 28 minutes actual running time an average speed of 42½ miles an hour with a petrol consumption of 43 miles to the gallon. The maximum speed was 60 miles an hour. The "Minor" used had run 5,000 miles and Dr. Allum had never before driven against the clock. The load included two spare wheels, extra petrol, and oil supplies, and two suitcases, in addition to two passengers. - (Ref- The Mail (Adelaide, SA : 1912 - 1954)(about) Previous issue Saturday 2 November 1929).
