James Thomas John BEAN was born in 1752 in North Hayling, Hampshire, England. His christening tooklace on the 15th April, 1753, North Hayling, Hants, England. His parents were Thomas BEANE & Elizabeth PITT.

"DEATH"

James Thomas John BEAN died on the 19th April, 1839, in Parramatta, NSW. His burial took place on the 22nd April, 1839, in St. John's Church of England, Parramatta, NSW.

"MARRIAGE"

James Thomas John marrieed MIss Betty TAYLOR who was born in 1754 in England. They married on the 6th February, 1780, in St. James' Church of England, Westminster, Middlesex, England.

"IMMIGRATION"

Mr James Thomas John BEAN arrived as a settler on "HMS Buffalo" on the 26th April, 1799, with his wife Elizabeth ( Betsy) Taylor & five children, Elizabeth, Rose, James (2nd) Thomas, Ann. William. Thomas Bradley and Elizabeth Bradley were passengers on that voyage.

James was Granted a land grant No 897 on the 12th November, 1799, of 100 Acres in the district of Toongabbi the Rent was 2 shillings per year Commencing after five years.

James Bean's 17 year old Daughter Rose Ellen, was a victem of the 1803 uprising, being raped by the escaped convicts.

James was a voulenteer civilian at the battle of "Vinegar Hill" in 1804.

Unable to consistently obtain a fair living from his farm, Bean turned to his old occupation as a carpenter, being placed in charge of the building of 'The Rum Hospital' in Sydney between 1811 & 1818 by the Reverend Hassall. Using Plans apparently drawn up by the artist Lewin, & under the Patronage of Governor Macquarie, who had made a deal with the financial backers Blaxcell & Riley in return for rum concessions,a hansom colonaded Colonial hospital was built.

Part of it still stands today, as the Mint Museum, & the front section of the New South Wales Parliament House in macquarie St. Towards the end of his life, Bean obtained a valuable city land grant, bounded by, Market, York & Clarence Sts, the area Occupied in 1988 by the National Mutual Building.

Bean died on 4 April 1839 at Parramatta aged 87 years. He was buried in the churchyard of the St John's Parramatta.

His daughter Rose Ellen Maria ,who had been a victim of the convict outrage of 1803, married in 1804. Her husband, Thomas DUNN a former convict, later became a Police Constable. - (Ref- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=monaropioneers&id=I31324).
