(b) "....William Eagleton otherwise "Bones" late of the parish of the Saint of Saviour within the Borough of Southwark labourer and James Spencer late of the same......upon the 12th day of January.....with force and arms at the parish aforesaid......the dwelling house of Edward Warren feloniously did break and enter...and one Deal Box of the value of 2s. one Iron Padlock of the value of 6 d. three woollen cloth Coats of the value of 3 pounds one pair of Jean Breaches of the value of 5s. one pair of Corduroy Breeches of the value of 4s. one pair of Nankeen Breeches of the value of 3s. one Shag waistcoast of the value of 4s. one silk Waistcoat of the value of 4s. one dimmity Waistcoat of the value of 2s. one black Silk gown of the value of 15s. one muslin Gown of the value of 20s. one printed cotton Gown of the value of 10s. and one black silk Cloak of the value of 20s. of the goods and chattels of the said Edward Warren feloniously did steal........."

"Not guilty of breaking and entering Guilty of stealing goods v. 39s. no chattels. Trans: 7 years beyond the sea."

He was a convict - trial at Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, March 23, 1786 for theft of clothing with a value of 39 shillings - age 31 years occupation labourer - sentence 7 years - arrived with the 1st fleet on the ship "Alexander," January 19, 1788. [The convict transport ship "Alexander" - 452 tons, 114ft. x 31ft., a fully barque-rigged ship, built in Hull 1783.

Master Duncan Sinclair - Surgeon William Balmain - sailed with 195 male convicts; loaded at Woolwich and Portsmouth, and departed Portsmouth, May 12/13, 1787 and arrived January 19, 1788 - a journey of 251 days.]

William received a 60 acre land grant at Prospect Hill in 1796, and was later farming at Concord. He became a juror in 1826.

In the 1828 Muster he is recorded but with no details, nothing later is known. At times he is known to have resided with Sophia Browne [1806], who was classed as his wife in 1814.

MARRIAGE

after his arrival in Australia on the 26th January, 1788, he married Miss Mary (Convict) DICKINSON (Another First Fleeter) on the 17th February, 1788, (Ref - NSW BDM V178815 4/1788) making this young couple one of the very first marriages in Australia's History and Sydney's in particular. One of ten marriages [the first in Australia] conducted that day by the Chaplain, Rev. Richard Johnston.

William had received his ticket of leave in 1793 as a consequence of Governor Phillip selecting 26 of the best convicts, he received a 60 acre land grant at Prospect on the 28th May, 1793, which he named "Eggleton's Endeavour", indicating, no doubt, his determination to do well on this strange land.

On the 18th January, 1817, he received a further land grant of 60 acres at Airds and then again on the 30th June, 1823 he secured another grant at Bargo. In 1826, he became a qualified juror. - (Ref- oldmill65originally submitted this to Cook/Haydon Family Tree on 16 Nov 2008)

2. 1791 - First son, William, was born on October 16, 1791 in Prospect, NSW, and died on June 5, 1792 in Prospect, NSW.

3. 1796 - Elizabeth, born February 18, 1796 in Prospect, NSW, Australia, died on 20 January 20, 1849 in Campbelltown, NSW, and buried at Campbelltown, NSW.

4. 1793 - William Eggleton Junior was born on May 12, 1793 in Sydney Cove, NSW, and died on March 23, 1858 in Avondale, Dapto, NSW.

His (2nd) Marriage

Family: William Eggleton/Sophia Rugles (Rugglass) married on the 30th May, 1814. - Eggleton, Sophia died on the 10th April, 1887. 91ys - (Ref- Inscription List for Milton Anglican Pioneer Cemetery).- 12657/1887 EGGLETON,SOPHIA - AGE 91 YEARS DIED MILTON MILTON.

Jane Heydon’s mother, Mary Eggleton, was the daughter of William Eggleton, whose father William came to the colony on the First Fleet. This William Eggleton was tried in Surrey for theft and came out to this country to serve his sentence of seven years. He arrived on the convict ship “Alexander” on 26th January, 1788. Soon after his arrival, William was married at Sydney Cove to Mary Dickenson, also from Surrey, who had been a barrow lady there and who was also serving a sentence of seven years for theft. Mary Dickenson was another who sailed in the First Fleet, on the ship "Lady Penrhyn". Mary Eggleton’s mother was Sophia Rugglass, daughter of convict Thomas Rugglass who came out on the ship "Active" in 1791 and who married Mary Armstrong, convict, who came on the ship “Indispensable”.

Jane’s father, John Heydon, also had convict connections, his father James having arrived on the “Matilda” in 1791.
