John and James came out to Port Phillip in 1841 on the Georgiana and James is listed as an Overseer of the ship, aged 21. He paid for passage and John was steerage. They arrived 19 Feb 1841 in Port Phillip, Victoria then went immediately to Gundagai, then Tumut.

Both were single! John is listed on the 1841 census as being alone on "Gouak", District Murrumbidgee. Probably Gonyak as there is at least a dozen spellings for that property. They were settlers, not squatters. Paid 10 pound for the run license.- (Ref- Maree)

DROWNING - WAGGA, Friday.- A fatality marred the show festivities, Mr. I Martin Gibbons, a business man, losing his life. About a quarter to 11 o'clock on Thursday night Mr. Gibbons went out into the yard of the Golden Fleece hotel, which is one of tbe hotels recently delicensed and was taken over by Mr. Gibbons and his wife as a public residential. The back yard is on the bank of the Murrumbidgee River, and Mr. Gibbons being unfamiliar with the surroundings appeared to have stepped over the bank and fallen into the river. No trace of the body bas been discovered, tbe strong current evidently carrying the body down stream. - (Ref- The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Saturday 26 August 1922).

A DROWNING FATALITY. On Friday a camper on the bank of the Murrumbidgee near to Wagga, (Victoria) saw the body of a man. caught on a snag. He informed tbe police, and at was recovered. It was fully clothed, and was identified as that of Martin Gibbons, who disappeared from the Golden Fleece Hotel, Wagga, of which be was licensee, late at night about three weeks ago. Mr. Gibbons was not accuamted with the locality at the back of his hotel, -which abate on the river, -and he walked over tbe bank into he river, which was in high flood. - (Ref- The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901-1929) Monday 11 September 1922).
