Mrs Nell Hooper (Rose)

Obituary

MRS. LIONEL ROSE

The late Mrs. Nell Rose came from an old and widely known grazing family in the Cootanmndra district of N.S.W., and spent her girlhood days with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Steve White, of Merriuibiudiuyah, Bethungra. Except for her schooling, and for trip abroad in 1923, she spent most of her life in the Bethungra and Cootamundra districts, where she was always a beloved person ality, an influence upon the lives of others, and the mainstay of the hard but unspectacular work so often required of her by such organisations as the C.W.A., Returned Servicemen's Auxiliary, etc.

During and after the second World War she lived in her own home in Cootamundra and her house was adopted as a base by her many friends from the surrounding district, and a refuge for their children in times of stress. She left these life-long associations in November, 1950. after her second marriage, and drove to Alice Springs with her husband, eager to take her full share in the joys and responsibilities of a new and different life.

This hope was not to be fulfilled for there was scarcely time to sense her new surroundings before she was struck down with a cerebral haemorrhage on January, 1951. Her recovery was courageous and remarkable but just when complete restoration of her former vigour seemed in sight, she succumbed to a second attack and passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 1, after an illness of only a few hours, and was buried later in the day in the Alice Springs Cemetery, being the youngest of the family, she has always been known as Bae', her sisters, Mrs. Alan Scott and Mrs. Jim Butler, and her brother. Paul White, are still living. Her children are Bill Hooper, 23, who was married last month and is settling down on his cattle property at Gloucester, N.S.W.; John, 19, is studying arts at the Sydney University; Jane. 14, is at school at Frenshain. Mittagong: and Peter. is at Alice Springs. - (Ref- Centralian Advocate (Alice Springs, NT : 1947 - 1954)(about) Previous issue Friday 13 April 1951 ).
