IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA

Immegration to Australia on the vessel "Catteaux Wattel" arriving in Sydney, NSW on the 9th March, 1855

FIRE - destroyed the ship in Darling Harbour, Australia...

About one o'clock this morning the alarm of fire was announced by the ringing of the fire bells. It was soon made known that the scene of the conflagration was in the vicinity of Darling Harbour.

It appears that at half-past twelve o'clock, Mr G.C. Reid, the Custom-House Officer on board the Belgian ship, Catteaux Wattel, lying alongside Botts' Wharf, was awoke by being almost suffocated with smoke, and heard the carpenter enquire of the chief mate where the smoke was coming from. On reaching the deck Mr Reid perceived a quantity of smoke issuing from the after-hatchway, and at once came to the conclusion that the ship was on fire.

The alarm being given, application for assistance was made to the ships lying near, and very soon after, Captain Phillips, of the "Bengal , and the chief officer of the "Switzerland>" with the crew of that vessel, came on board, and by their aid the chains were slipped, and the vessel hauled from alongside the hulk. In the meantime Captain Nicaise, the commander of the vessel, was sent for, and subsequently Captain Crook, the harbour-master, came on board.

During this time the fire was raging below, and on the after-hatchway being taken off a tremendous volume of smoke issued out; in order to prevent the draught from Bfanning the flames the hatch was immediately closed.

By the aid of boats the ship was towed across to Milson's Point, where she took the ground. Orders had been given to scuttle the ship, and two holes were with difficulty made in her port bows. Soon after the flames commenced rushing out of the main hatchway, and at length out of the stern of the ship. At about half-past three the decks caught fire, and at four the misen and mainmast went over the side, the ship laying over on her starboard bilge. At half-past four a gun-boat belonging to the French war steamer Monge commenced firing into her.

The discharge of the inward cargo of the Catteaux Wattel was only finished last night, and tomorrow she was to proceed to the Circular Quay to load. A large portion of her outward cargo, consisting of 600 bags of Kauri gum, 700 hides, belonging to Dangar, Gilchrist, and Co., 22 bales of wool, shipped by Messrs Willis, Merry and Co., and 30,000 treenails.

The Catteaux Wattel is a fine ship of 889 tons register, owned by Messrs Catteaux Wattel and Co of Antwerp. She has made several quick passages between this port and London, and was a favourite ship for passengers.

As mentioned above, she had commenced taking in her inward cargo for London.

The only men on board at the time the fire broke out were the chief officer, the steward, the boatswain, the third mate and an apprentice. The second mate had recently been discharged, and the rest of the crew are in gaol for desertion.

The following engines were at Botts' Wharf shortly after the alarm was given -

No. 2 Volunteers' two engines,

Insurance Brigades' two engines, and

No. 1 Volunteers'.

These were all in readiness for operating upon the fire, but the ship having been removed from the wharf, their services were rendered useless.

At 6 a.m. the foremast went over the side.

The boats' crews of the Water police, in charge of Inspector Cowell, were in attendance, and rendered every assistance."

WORK HISTORY:

The 1901 Census shows Michael HUNT as living at West Blowering, Via Tumut. NSW. The record shows his family as 3 Males and 4 Females. This could possible be:

1 Self Michael

1 Wife Elizabeth

2 Son Joseph - born 1874

2 Daughter Catherine - born 1876 - who married Samuel Groves 1901

3 Daughter Mary Maria - born 1881 - who married Alfred A A Tindall 1903

So, 1 male and 1 female were there at the count. Who were they?

The farm Michael and Catherine Hunt purchased at West Blowering which was firstly taken up by a Mr John McBarne.

Source: Parish of Yellowin, County of Selwyn, Land District of Tumut dated 1/9/1874.

They grew vegetables on the river flats, then Elizabeth would set offfor the mountains on a wagon loaded with produce. There she found a ready market for these items which could not be grown in the cooler climate.

She must have been a remarkable and strong woman to manage such an undertaking single handed.

They then sold the property just after WW1 to a James Woods who was a bullock driver between Adelong and Sydney, another amazing feat under todays working conditions. Maybe they also owned the property to the north which was later inheriated owned by the Waldron's as James Wood left the two properties to the Boyds and Waldrons which was about 116 acres. Michael Hunt and Elizabeth K Korn had the following children:

i. JOSEPH5 HUNT was born in 1874 in West Blowering, Tumut ((Ref - NSW BDM 20121)).

ii. CATHERINE ELLEN HUNT was born in 1876 in West Blowering, Tumut. NSW ((Ref- NSW BDM 21167)). She died in Unknown. She married Samuel John "Jack" Groves, son of George Groves and Margaret, in 1901 in Tumut. NSW ((Ref NSW BDM No. 7703)). He was born in 1872 in Yass, NSW ((Ref NSW BDM No. 19808)). Drover in the Kiandra area Farmer, "Melgrove" East Blowering, Tumut. Tumut Prior to white settlement, Tumut marked the boundary of three separate Aboriginal tribes. To the north lived the Ngunawal, to the south the Walgalu and to the west, the Wiradjuri.

During summer tribes came together and journeyed to the highest peaks to feast on the plentiful Bogong moths. The moth's outline is used today in the Tumut Region Visitor Centre. During the late 1820s settlers pushed down the Murrumbidgee

Generation 4 (con't) Visitor Centre logo. During the late 1820s settlers pushed down the Murrumbidgee and by 1829 the first pioneers were on the Tumut River. Land was first settled at Darbalara, close to the junction of the Tumut and Murrumbidgee. During the first 20 years settlement was scattered along the Tumut River, the original settlement being at Mill Angle, at the end of the present showground road, where the first Inn was kept by Tim O'Mara.

On the opposite bank a Mr Anderson set up his blacksmith's shop, and here he and a Mr Foord built the first bridge over the river about 1850.

This was the earliest Tumut - wattle and daub and slab-built huts in which dwelt the blacksmiths and teamsters, until a flood in 1852 consolidated the scattered hamlets into one village, and Tumut as it is today, was born. By 1887 Tumut (a name derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "a quiet resting place by the river") was a municipality; by 1928 it had become the headquarters of the thriving Tumut Shire, which also embraced Adelong and Batlow. Today the explorers and the pioneers have long gone, but the hauntingbeauty of the valley remains. People from the original three tribes still live across the Tumut region and perform rituals and ceremonies at important sites to maintain their relationship with the land. Tumutis the hub of a beautiful valley at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. With a population of over 6000 the town boasts a modern cosmopolitan shopping centre equal to the best in any town of the same size, excellent social facilities and a large range of fine caravan parks, motels and holiday flats, bed and breakfast establishments, licensed clubs, restaurants and cafes, and a first class Visitor Information Centre to handle all your enquiries on all the things to see and do in the Tumut Region. Beauty is everywhere - incredibly beautiful parks, famous trees, Adelong's picturesque pastoral scenes, Batlow's glorious orchard country, Yarrangobilly Caves, awe inspiring power stations and lakes of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, enormous stands of pine and hardwood plantations, and the vast Kosciuszko National Park with its abundance of wildlife and flora, unique landscape and snow. The township provides a wide variety of quality accommodation optionsto make your stay memorable while the wide selection of outlets in the modern shopping centre will be able to meet all your needs. Historically, there's plenty to reflect Tumut's heritage: magnificentold buildings including the town's churches, courthouse and hotels, its pioneer cemetery on Adelong Road which includes the grave of ThomasBoyd, a member of the Hume and Hovell expedition which passed throughTumut in 1824. The Tumut Historical Society's museum has fascinating information about farm and domestic items charting the town's pioneering history, superb photos of the region's development and a special display featuringmemorabilia of famous Talbingo author, Miles Franklin. The magnificent mountainuous terrain of the Tumut region has attracted a large field of international female cyclists competing in the Tour De Snowy. This world class event has gained a reputation equal to the Tour De France. The Festival of the Falling Leaf is celebrated annually in April. Formore up-to-date information, drop in to the Tumut Region Visitor Centre.

iii. MARY MARIA HUNT was born in 1881 in West Blowering, Tumut. NSW - (Ref NSW BDM 27578). She married Alfred Arthur A Tindall, son of William Charles (1st) Tindall and Frances Burnes, in 1903 in Tumut. NSW -( Ref NSW BDM No. 9486).

He was born in 1874 in Tumut, NSW - (Ref NSW BDM 20218). Notes for Mary Maria Hunt:
