FAMILY MOVE TO Australia

Henry and his family sailed from Plymouth on the 29th September 1839 on the ship "ALFRED" and arrived in Sydney on the 7th January 1840.

At this stage the family consisted of wife Janet and the first three children born to them. Margaret & Elizabeth, along with George Aitken MOON who died soon after arriving in Sydney.

They arrived as free settlers through the Assisted Immigration Scheme. [1]Another MOON Family researcher Mr John MOON of Canberra informed me that Henry & Janet with their children were in the Queanbeyan, Canberra region in the first stage of settlement. While there, Henry became one of the Trustees for the land which had been allocated for the Presbyterian Church. He also states that the family left the area around the years of 1843/44.

This move was brought about by the need of all the Independent Gold Mines around the district desiring a quicker way to process the ore they dug out and needed to make as small as possible to separate the Gold from the rock. This would have been a Godsend by the miners that weren't connected to a Company with their own crusher.

This fact gave Henry the idea that he could apply his milling principles to crush rock instead of milling to make flour.

Cost of using his crusher were £2-10-0 per ton for over 80 ton £3-0-0 per ton for 3 to 80 ton .

He also built the first Hotel in Tumut in 1854, It was called "The Rising Moon"., It stood were today's "ROYAL HOTEL" now stands.

Henry was involved in sponsoring people to come to Australia. He is connected in many ways to people around the district in that he stood for them as a witness or as their employer.

As it turns out most of them were relatives from home.

One of those he may have sponsored is William Crichton, was a cousin of Henry's wife Janet. and was employed by Henry as a miller in Scotland, I feel that Henry may have sponsored William to immigrate when he realised the opportunities that existed here for a man with his experience in milling.

Jane Crichton, who arrived as a £1-0-0 assisted immigrant in 1854 with her youngest sibling, Jane, stated she had a brother William living at Tarcuter which is in the area around Adelong.

She married Stephen Fisher 0n the 18th Oct 1856. Henry Moon was the man to give her away at the wedding.

From there they moved to the area of Tumut & Adelong, the place where Henry built up his business empire, for want of a better word, by starting with what he knew, the art of milling grain. The site of his first Flour Mill was on the Gilmore Creek.

He not only had a Mill, he built many Mills around the district. He also built up another business which entailed the "Milling of Ore" He built a Crusher for the purpose of Crushing Ore from the Gold Mines of the districts.
