DEATH

OBITUARY - MR. SYDNEY GEORGE PEARCE

The Tumut community was grieved to learn on Friday that Mr Sydney George Pearce, of Bombowlee, Tumut, had passed away rather suddenly at mid-day. A fortnight previous he had a seizure, the effects of which was to paralyse him on oneside, but he improved quite a lot under Dr. Harbison's care until last Saturday week and then had another bad turn, but rallied again.

On the following Tuesday, at the wish of his family, Dr. H. O. Lethbridge, of Narandera was summoned, arriving on Wednesday to consult. With Dr. Harbison on the case. He showed marked improvement and on Thursday and Friday morning last was quite bright and the family were holding out, hopes of recovery; but he suddenly became worse near noon and collapsed completely and died.

All the family were present at the home. Mrs. Rowlands, accompanied by her husband, having arrived from Narandera on 7th inst. when she learned of her father's illness. Deceased was the youngest son, of the late Henry Pearce, of Tasmania, and was born at Hobart 70 years ago.

He came to Victoria 43 years ago, and 10 years later took up residence on Cooleman Station on the Goobragandra River, which he purchased from the late R. A. Newman.

That year he married in Sydney Miss Maria Steel. To the union there were two sons, Henry and Jack (Sydney Steel), and three daughters, Louise (Mrs. H. K. Rowlands, Narandera), Myra May and Mary Heath, all of whom survive to mourn their irreparable loss.

Mrs Pearce died 10 years ago. In 1919 the parents and family came to Tumut to live in Merrivale st, so as to be close to facilities for the education of their children, and later on purchased a farm on Bombowlee. where he died. The subject of this obituary was very popular with all he came in contact.

He was for a number of years an alderman of the Tumut Municipal Council and took a keen interest in everything tending towards the progress of the town and the property of its inhabitants. He was also a member of the Free-masons craft. He had been a friend to many in this community, and his passing has caused a gap in civic affairs, for it was only of late years that he dissociated himself from active public life.

The only surviving brother is Mr. H. H. Pearce, of Tallangatta, Victoria.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, after a short service had been conducted at the home by Rev. S. Broadfoot, Rector of All Saints. The long cortege bore testimony to the esteem in which he was held by all classes. Rev. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside in the C. of E. portion of the New Cemetery, Mr. C. W. Burt conducted the mortuary arrangements and

Messrs F. W. Smart, Ian Marsh, E. Brown, H. Weeden, H. Lowther and A. Downing were the pallbearers. - (Ref- The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950)(about) Previous issue Tuesday 29 June 1937 Next issue Previous page Page 1).
