STORY

In 1934 the sad Newspaper head line appeared - WOMAN DROWNED. TUMUT, Saturday - The coroner (Mr R L Blakeney) returned a verdict of accidental drowning in the case of Mrs Rebecca Smith, 51, who met her death in the Tumut River, near Jones' Bridge, Blowering, seven miles south of Tumut while bathing with a picnic party Evidence disclosed that she could not swim.

She stepped backwards into a deep hole - the body was recovered in 24ft of water. She was the widow of the late Alfied Smith and daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thompson Myers, well known in Tumut and Monaro She leaves six children. - (Ref- The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Monday 12 March 1934).
