Mr Frederick G White

MR. F. G. WHITE DIES AT VIC. HARBOR; CITY PIONEER Former ' well-known local business- man, Mr. F. G. White, died suddenly at his home at Victor Harbor last night*. Mr. White lived in Broken Hill ¿or 58 years befare leaving for S.A. about three months ago. Mr White, who was 89, was regarded as "the grand old man'' of the local business community, and was always referred" to as "F.G." He was associated with the business life of the city for more than half a centuary.

Mr. White, came to Australia from England at the age of 20 and worked for Elder Smith and Co. Ltd. in Adelaide. He arrived in Broken Hill in October, 1 1895, ánd shortly after was appointed manager of Harrold Bros, machining merchants and ore buyers in Delamore Street. That firm closed in 1895 and Mr. White opened his own business and was joined a few years later by Mr. H. L. Hosier. - The Arni traded for many years as ore buyers and stock and sharcbrokers under the name of White and Hosier.

Mr. Hosier left the firm to take a position as secretary of the Williamstown Racing Club, but Mr. White carried on the business until July, 1950, when he decided to retire. In addition to his own business Mr White was associated in other business activities. With the late Mr. O. Von Reiben and E. H. Fromain he was associated in an ice making business. This operated in Chapple Street and later Blende Street before being transferred to the present site in Beryl Street. Mr White was the local director for the Alaska Ice Cream and Produce Co. Ltd of S.A. which trades here under the name of the Broken Hill Ice and Produce Co. Ltd.

Keen on Sport - He was actively associated with the business and sporting life of the community and was one of the stalwarts of the Chamber of Commerce.

In sporting circles Mr White was a member of the old Broken Hill Racing Club committee, for several years and had success as an owner with Kyklos and other gallopers.

Kyklos won several important races, including a local Cup. Mr White was president of the Broken Hill Golf Cîub for 20 years, President and later Patron of the Broken Hill Bowling Club.

Until about 1948 Mr White was active in local campaigns for members of the Nationalist and Country Parties in Federal, State and Municipal elections.

During two World Wars he was associated with patriotic funds and with the rerjatria tin-v fund after World War Mr White leaves a widow; one son (Fred of Geelong, Victoña), and two daughters (Mrs B Nicholls of Bombay and Miss Gwen White of Victor Harbour. S.A.).

Tributes - Paying tribute to Mr White the manager of the Broken Hill Ice and Produce Co. and president of the Chamber of Commere (Mr. Clem Davison) said Mr. White had always been actively associated, with the local company and was held in the highest esteem by management and staff Mr White had regarded the Broken Hill firm as a vital section of the company's activities and had given the staff every assistance and consideration. Mr. Davison said, Mr White was respected not only by his own business associates, but also by those with whom he came into opposition. He said Mr. White was strong in his opinions, but genuine and sincere in his decisions. Mr. Davison said there were not many men like "F.G." as he was commonly known, and one of the greatest tributes paid to him was a presentation made on his 80th birthday at a function at the Exchange Hotel. On that occasion associates paid tribute to Mr. White's many fine qualities in the public life of the city. pMr. Davison expressed the sympathy of the chamber members and the whole business community to Mrs. White and family. - (Ref- Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : 1888 - 1954)(about) Previous issue Monday 24 August 1953).
