NEW SAWMILL NOW IN OPERATION

At Billapaloola

The Riverina Sawmllling Company's portable, sawmilling plant passed through Tumut last Wednesday en route to Billapaloola. The portable sawmill, which is driven by a Diesel engine, was designed and built by Mr. Fred. White, of Wajga, who is the proprietor of the Riverina Sawmilling Company. Mr. Wal White, the Tumut manager of the firm, escorted the four motor lorries laden with the equipment to Billapaloola State Forest, where, it is to operate cutting hardwood for building purposes.

On Thursday the equipment was unloaded and within eight hours after commencing to unload the portable saw mill was operating. Early en Friday the first lead of 2,000 super feet of , building hardwcod arrived in Tumut. I Some of the logs which have been cut to go through the sawmill contain over 2,000 super feet of timber. A feature of the mill is the mechanical feed which makes the work easier for the operators; also the saw-guards which were patented, designed and built by Mr. Fred. White. All the sawmillers who have seen the saw-guards have described them as the safest they have seen.

Mr. White is building houses at Billapaloola for his men and hopes in the very near future to have a school started for the children of his employees and nearby children. Up to 20 men will be employed at Billapaloola. At the Wagga Branch of the Riverina Sawmilling Company 69 men are employed.

In a few months' time the portablo sawmill will move to another area in the forest at Billapaloola, and as the men have now had experience in the setting it up Mr. While expects to have the mill operating within six hours after commencing to move. - (Ref- he Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) (about) Previous issue Tuesday 17 February 1948 Next issue Page 3)
