Newspaper article - "ABOUT TUMUT AND ADELONG".

The Tumut and Adelong districts are both within the zone of good rainfall. Mr. George Godfrey's farm is eight miles from Tumut. It comprises 300 acres, divided into 13 paddooks, and here the owner has resided for 41 years, during which time the ground has been continuously worked.

The holding is mostly forest land, with a small portion of rich flat on the sides of a small creek. Most of this, however, had to be reclaimed by Mr. Godfrey some years back by drainage. The drainage has also been utilised to irrigate 10 acres of good maize land. Maize, wheat, oats, and pumpkins have all been cultivated. Rotation is practised, oats, maize, and wheat, then fallowed or grazed with sheep on a crop of rape.

In the past the property has been devoted to cultivation and fattening stock, but Mr. Godfrey's son, who has now the active management, has started dairying. A neat milklng-shed has been erected, and the dairy is fitted up in modern style, small but complete. The milking herd, of about 30 cows, is an even one. All the stock on this property are good.

Mr. Godfrey has planted both paspalum and sheep burnet, but not too successfully. He has also tried lucerne on the flat, but found that a hard clayey sub soil prevented its doing well.

There are a neat homestead, garden, and orchard, and good out buildings, but the owner was recently unfortunate enough to lose some of his buildings by fire. The fences are in good order, and, the property is kept clean. A useful contrivanee for keeping butter and household supplies cool during the hot months is worth copying. A 400-gaIlon tank stands on brick foundations, about l8 inches high. The walls and floor have been cemented, and a small door made, the whole acting as a miniature cool storage chamber. - (Ref- The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)(about) Previous issue Monday 4 November 1907 Page 4).
