The Halloran’s at Lacmalac had gone to mass in Tumut. As they were leaving the church a message was received that a huge fire was burning on the plains. Mr. Halloran said he would get home as quickly as possible and start mustering. Many people thought he was quite mad and that Tumut would be safe. “Lacmalac Vale” was completely burnt out that evening but Mr. Halloran’s wise judgment had enabled him to save half of his sheep. The fire really was a terrible one. The speed at which it raged along was incredible. From Jerilderie to the mountains beyond Tumut in one day – a long trail of destruction.
