On Monday evening, says the Singleton Argus, the first showers which visited Singleton fell, and from that time we have enjoyed the most desirable season, rain falling at intervals throughout, neither heavy enough to do injury, nor so light as to be ineffective of good results.

Late news from New Zealand states that a man named Moffatt, who was suspected of manufacturing powder and selling it to natives, has been brought in from Upper Wanganui by a number of natives. He was brought before the resident magistrate at Wanganui and committed for trial on the evidence heard, Avhieh generally went to show that he had been making large quantities of gunpowder, and in a book found on him there was an entity in his own writing to the effect that he had made 2864 pound for the Waikatos.

One witness named Nott, who had known Moffatt for the last five years, said that in April last he saw him in Upper Wanganui, making six tin dishes of powder; it was of good quality. By the next morning it was taken away, he did not know by whom, but thought by the Waikatos, who got it instead of the Wangannie. It was thought this is the reason the Wanganuis informed on Moffat and had him arrested.

The schooner Reward, Captain Dinner, trading between Lyttleton and Le Bon's Bay, is missing. She left Lyttleton for that bay on 4th April, was last seen on the 7th driving off the land, and is supposed to have been lost in the gale that night.

The agricultural statistics, just completed, for Auckland district show a total decrease of land under crop of 2600 acres, but in reality there is an increase. In wheat, number of acres sown for grain only, 105S acres; gross produce in bushels, 40,í)04¿ ; in oats for green food or hay, 5814Í; grain, 2200J; estimated gross produce of grain in bushels, 52,047.
