RAILWAY ACCIDENT

Death - 1914 - BOWRAL IN MOURNING. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS. BOWRAL, Sunday.

Although Exeter, the scene of the terrible railway accident on Friday night, is 13 miles from here, all the later incidents in connection with the dreadful catastrophe have been removed to this township, which has been practically in mourning for the past two days. Relatives of the killed and injured have been arriving by trains since Saturday morning, and many pathetic scenes occur at the hospital and raliway station.

Miss Jane Eglington, aged 49, was a school mistress at Granville, to which position she was appointed in 1903. She had been teaching since 1880. She was a native of Bowning, near Yass, and had been head mistress at Bourke, Liverpool, and West Redfern. Her body is being sent to Bowning by to-night's mail train.

Mrs. Susan Agnes Parker, aged 54, had intended travelling on Sunday night on a visit to relatives at Gundagai and Cootamundra, but suddenly made up her mind to give them a surprise by going unannounced on Friday instead of on Sunday as arranged, nor could she be dissuaded from this course. The body is being sent by to-night's train for interment at West Wyalong.

Miss Hilda Jessie Shelley, aged 32, was a native of Tumut. She was a governess, and was going to Tumut on holidays. The body will be sent to Tumut on Monday night's train. A sister of deceased is matron of the Portland Hospital.

Yes ! Saturday was a mournful and a very anxious time for the people of Tumut. Not only were passengers aboard journeying thither, but there was one amongst the number who lost her life in the terrible catastrophe. It was Miss Hilda Jessie Shelley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Shelley, of Tumut Plains, who was a nurse in the Burwoor Hospital.

The particulars as to how she met her death are not described in any of the city papers, so that we await particulars to disclose to our readers the closing scenes of her life. She was on her way to Tumut to join her people in a short sojurn, and the fact that she met her death in such a sudden and shocking way is a fearful strobe to her parents and all those who were acquainted with the estimable young lady. It is needless for us to apprise the parents of the widespread sym- pathy that is everywhere expressed for them in their awful trial ; it is every- where shown by the hushed whispers for the dead. The funeral of Nurse Shelley will take place upon the arrival of the train to-day, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the Old Cemetery. Rev. Ross-Edwards announced at Sunday night's service that a memorial service will be Fix this textpreached in All Saints' on Sunday night next. Digitisation generously supported by

Mrs. Elizabeth Clarke, of Hamilton, aged 53, was going on a visit to her son at Harden. The body was sent by the 6.30 train this evening for interment at Hamilton.

Mr. James C. Minnis, aged 26, was an employee of the interlocking department of the railway, and was going on a trip with his wife, Ethel Elsie Minnis, aged 24. Both bodies are being sent to Sydney by the 6.30 train on Monday morning for interment in the Catholic Cemetery at Rookwood.

Mr. Alfred Bray, aged 43, the mail guard, was a resident of Carlton, and had been 21 years in the railway service. He has left a wife and seven children. The body is being sent to Hurstville by the 6.30 train on Monday morning.

Mr. George Pollard, aged 21, was a black-smith at Jerrawa, and was returning from a holiday trip to Sydney, The body is being sent to Jerrawa by mail train to-night, and will be interred in the Dalton Cemetery.

Of Frederick Kurzenhagen, and a woman supposed to be Mrs. Kurzenhagen, very little is known, but from papers found in Kurzenhagen's pocket, it is thought they were going to Young to take a position as married couple. Kurzenhagen was formerly employed at Mittagong. - (Ref- The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)(about) Previous issue Monday 16 March 1914).
