1934 - PARENTAGE DISPUTED - Tumut Double Drowning EVIDENCE - AT INQUEST. TUMUT, Monday.

'The only reason I can give for my wife taking the boy Fred with I her is due to the fact that I have disputed with her a number of times that I was the father of the child. The boy had fair hair and belonged to Tindall. . . She may have thought that if she left tho boy behind I would not look after him. I never disputed being the father of the girl Doris; .the boy's, twin sister."

The foregoing formed the nucleus of a remarkable statement alleged to have been made to the Police by John Martin, dairy farmer, of Blowering, near Tumut, and the husband of the dead woman, which was read at the inquest on Mrs Florence Eliza Martin (39), and her 18-months-old 'twin son, William Frederick Martin, whose bodies were recovered tied together from the Tumut River, on January 10.

SUICIDE FINDING - The coroner found that Mrs. Martin had committed suicide by drowning, and had murdered the child also by drowning.

Sergeant Stewart said that on removing the bodies from the river he found the child's body was attached by tapes of an apron loosely tied around the woman's neck and around the body of the child. In the apron were stones weighing five pounds. A woollen shawl was around the child and fastened to the woman's clothing.

Sergeant Stewart added that Martin, in several interviews with him, had said that he was very doubtful about being the father of the dead child.

Sergeant Stewart then produced a written statement which he said had been handed to him by Martin, who said it was written by Mrs. Martin after she had been caught in a room with William Tindall. The statement read : "I, the undersigned, admit that I have committed adultery with William Tindall during the last two years and was fairly caught. (Signed) Florence E. J. Martin. Witness, G. Danvers."

A gun with which Martin had stated to Sergeant Stewart he had hit William Tindall over the head bending the barrel and breaking the stock, was also produced.

TINDALL'S EVIDENCE - William Tindall gave evidence that he is a retired farmer. He said he had known the Martin family for five years. On different occasions Martin had asked the witness, to drive his wife into Tumut. He had visited Mrs. Martan at her home while Martin was absent.

The witness said that on January 6 he visited Mrs. Martin. About 10.30 p.m. he was in a room with her in the front of the house in which there was a bed. The witness was sitting near the door and Mrs. Martin was sitting on the end of the seat. Her husband came in and said the witness "the next thing I knew I was hit with something heavy. I remember falling out of the door. I was knocked stupid. . I then walked to my home, reaching there about 11.30 p.m. I washed the blood from my head and face and went to bed. I did not see Mrs. Martin after I was struck on the head by John Martin, and she did not come to the house where'I was living after that."

Constable Taylor stated that on the night of January 7 John Martin came up and said to Tindall: "I am telling you now with the Policeman here that if I ever catch you with my wife again I will shoot you. - (Ref- Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : 1888 - 1954)(about) Previous issue Monday 22 January 1934 Page 1).
